Pitfalls When Buying a Car from China: How to Avoid Scammers

The Chinese automotive market continues to gain momentum thanks to the implementation of modern technologies and high product quality. Today, China is the global leader in automobile exports, the majority of which are electric vehicles. However, this has also expanded opportunities for scammers - as a single fraudulent car sale can generate significant profit. This is facilitated by the information vacuum created in China to protect against cyberattacks - it is difficult to track a vehicle’s history, especially for foreigners. Additionally, in China it is widely exploited that the buyer is located in another country and cannot personally attend the vehicle inspection. This has created ideal conditions for fraud. Below, we examine how buyers are deceived when purchasing Chinese cars and what to pay attention to in order to prevent it.

Fraud Schemes When Buying a Car from China

  • Vehicle substitution after contract signing and payment. This issue becomes apparent only after the container arrives to the buyer, when claims are groundless. The deception is carried out by showing photos of a top-version vehicle with premium features.
  • Cosmetic restoration of cars with accident history. At auctions, damaged cars are assigned a letter (A, B, C…), depending on the degree of damage. Dishonest traders exploit this by purchasing heavily damaged cars, fixing only visible defects, and reselling them under a different category – for example, buying in condition D and selling as B.
  • Battery manipulation. Using specific software, scammers reset the number of charging cycles or temporarily inflate battery capacity.
  • VIN code fraud. At auction, a car with a “clean” VIN history is presented, while an identical vehicle that has been in a serious accident is loaded into the container.
  • Mileage falsification. Although mileage data is duplicated in three separate systems, scammers have learned to synchronize readings across all units and overwrite the non-volatile memory of control modules.
  • False warranty obligations. If the vehicle is not purchased from an official dealer, the promised “full factory warranty” often turns out to be fictitious service obligations.
  • Advance payment demand. Under the pretext of reservation or documentation costs, the buyer is asked for a deposit, after which the seller stops communicating or introduces “additional expenses.”
  • Concealment of flood or fire damage. Some regions of China suffer heavily from flooding, and electronics in flood-damaged cars fail over time. Such vehicles are cheaply purchased, dried out, and resold. The issue appears only months later due to contact corrosion.
  • Forged service book. Each visit to a service station should be recorded in the service book with mileage and maintenance details. Fake entries often result in costly major repairs.
